To dos

All linens should be washed in hot water with detergent before the birth. We recommend washing baby clothes and blankets in a sensitive skin type detergent.

Have a full set of mother’s pajamas with an overnight pad and a Depends panty available.

Turn up the temperature on your hot water heater to allow the tank to heat water faster.

Make your bed with the set of sheets you want to sleep in for your first week after the birth. Put a waterproof cover over the set of sheets. Then, make the bed again with an older set of sheets. The older set of sheets will be used while you are in labor and giving birth. After you give birth, we will remove the older sheets and waterproof cover, and you will get into your clean sheets ready to cuddle your newborn.

Food for labor

Labor is hard work. (That’s why it's called labor!) You will need to have easy sources of energy and electrolytes to help you keep going. You may want to have a selection of:

  • Coconut Water / Juice
  • Easy-to-eat snacks
  • Protein Bars
  • Fruit / Nuts / Cheese

Plan what you want to eat after the birth. Some people make a yummy breakfast casserole and freeze it. Your family or doula can pop it in the oven when you are nearing birth. Other people mix a pitcher of pancake batter and plan to have eggs & pancakes. I’d like you to eat a full meal after the birth, but it needs to be easy so you can also get a good nap while the baby is in his/her “recovery nap”.

Labor soup: If you choose to make the labor soup please do so ahead of time, and freeze it in Ziploc bags. You may use chicken or turkey in the recipe. You may play around with the vegetables. Click here for the “Labor Soup Recipe”

Extra pillows w/ plastic cover (trash bag and pillow case works)

TOP TO DOs

Chiropractic

Begin seeing a good chiropractor who can help keep your pelvis balanced, and help the baby get aligned really well. There is really good evidence that chiropractic care will help you have a shorter, easier labor.

Squats

Begin doing “doorway squats”. Each time you pass through a doorway with a door jam, face the door jam, hold on to it, and lower yourself into a deep balanced squat. Focus on releasing your hips on the way down, and supporting your pelvic floor with a little bit of internal ‘"umps” as you stand up.

Nutrition

Your goal for nutrition is 80 grams of protein a day. A serving of protein at every meal. Eat a “rainbow” of fresh vegetables, with lots of dark green, leafy vegetables.

Watch birth videos

You can learn a lot about birth by watching good videos.

Pregnancy tea

This week begin drinking 2-3 cups and by 36 weeks try to get in 1 quart of “NORA Pregnancy Tea” every day. The tea includes Nettles, Oat Straw, Red Raspberry Leaf, Alfalfa, Rose Hips and Orange Peel. Directions: Add 1/4 cup tea to 1 quart of boiling water. Steep overnight. You can add agave or honey if you prefer it a little more sweetened. Below is a link to the directions to preparing your NORA tea.
