Your baby is now fully formed . . . now his or her top priority is just too grow.

PREPPING FOR BIRTH

Comfort Measures

In around 10 weeks you’ll be birthing your baby! Now’s the time to really learn your pain management /coping skills to help you manage the challenges of labor.

We’ve already talked about yoga, walking, relaxation, spinning babies and meditation.

Every day, you use a variety of natural, instinctive skills that you have honed over a lifetime to manage stress and various discomforts. Many of these natural “coping skills” are so “normal” you don’t even know you do them. But, there are others that are more strategic.

One of the exercises you can do to help prepare for birth is to identify what you naturally do to manage physical and emotional discomforts.

Safe Birth

The hormone that is responsible for conceiving the baby is the same hormone that’s needed to birth a baby. You know the conditions that are needed for that hormone (oxytocin) to surge when you are in an intimate moment.

Those are the same conditions needed for that hormone to surge at any time. Which means dim lights, time and space to move and express with full freedom, and very little talking.

Oxytocin is made when the “primal” brain is activated. The “language brain” is a completely different place. The same way that someone speaking to you when you are on the cusp of falling asleep can pull you immediately “out of the zone” , people talking to you in labor can interrupt the hormonal bath of birthing as well.

We are depending on your optimal hormones to birth the baby and keep you safe. Ideally, only the laboring mom speaks — the rest of us respond quietly to whatever she needs without engaging a lengthy conversation.

TOP TO DO

Chiropractic

Begin seeing a good chiropractor who can help keep your pelvis balanced, and help the baby get aligned really well. There is really good evidence that chiropractic care will help you have a shorter, easier labor.

Squats

Begin doing “doorway squats”. Each time you pass through a doorway with a door jam, face the door jam, hold on to it, and lower yourself into a deep balanced squat. Focus on releasing your hips on the way down, and supporting your pelvic floor with a little bit of internal ‘"umps” as you stand up.

Nutrition

Your goal for nutrition is 80 grams of protein a day. A serving of protein at every meal. Eat a “rainbow” of fresh vegetables, with lots of dark green, leafy vegetables.

Watch birth videos

You can learn a lot about birth by watching good videos.

Pregnancy tea

This week begin drinking 2-3 cups and by 36 weeks try to get in 1 quart of “NORA Pregnancy Tea” every day. The tea includes Nettles, Oat Straw, Red Raspberry Leaf, Alfalfa, Rose Hips and Orange Peel. Directions: Add 1/4 cup tea to 1 quart of boiling water. Steep overnight. You can add agave or honey if you prefer it a little more sweetened. Below is a link to the directions to preparing your NORA tea.
