I strive to skillfully communicate, provide guidance, and counseling to foster a trusting relationship and encourage open communication. I advocate for informed choice, shared decision making, and the right to self-determination. I believe that these principles of midwifery are of utmost importance in building authentic relationships with the families I serve.
I believe in the awesome power of the mother and newborns body as they work in concert with one another to labor and birth. I understand that childbearing is a natural and normal progression of the mother's lifecycle. I advocate for the midwifery hallmark of non-intervention in the physiologic process of labor and birth.
You are perfectly and gloriously made!
I believe that the midwifery model of care is what every woman should receive to ensure she achieves her desired birth experience. I am committed to providing safe, comprehensive, evidence-based care which is family-centered and respects the diversity of each individual. With every client encounter I acknowledge the precious power and therapeutic value of human presence.
The Midwifery model of preconception counseling is an in depth review of a woman's current health status and health promotion regimens. This counseling focuses on the health and well being of the woman and has been shown to increase the chance of having a healthy baby. Preconception counseling is different for every woman, depending on their unique needs. Based on the woman's individual health, the midwife will suggest an individualized plan and follow-up if needed.
Prenatal visits are encouraged throughout the developmental stages your baby will move through during your pregnancy. These visits will take place in the privacy of your home. I will take the time to address your physical and emotional needs to ensure that your prenatal experience is one that is safe and enjoyable. Resources will be discussed that you may decide to partake in if you choose. Services during each visit may include lab specimens, urine assessments, blood pressure testing, nutritional counseling, fetal heart tones and growth assessments. I want to be there for you in anyway I can as you do the hard work of growing that little human!
I encourage you to stay in open communication with me when your labor begins. Communication is a key hallmark of midwifery. I will come directly to your home as soon as you've gone into active labor. Giving birth at home is a safe and viable option for low risk pregnancies. There you will have the comfort and serenity of a familiar environment. You will have the freedom to move around as you wish, eat what you would like, and relax in anyway that feels comfortable and calming for your body. Home water birth is also an option in either your own tub or a portable birth pool. Hydrotherapy provides comfort measures for labor and birth. The combination of support, comfort and safety from your family and our team, is beneficial in facilitating a safe and comforting birth experience.
Immediately following the birth I and my assistant will remain with you for a minimum of two hours to ensure that you and baby are transitioning as expected. I will assist with breast feeding, perform the newborns initial exam, evaluate the need for suturing, provide some instructions on caring for yourself and baby and remain with you until you are stable, The birthing areas will be cleaned up as you and baby relax in a warm herbal bath if you wish and your bed will be made with fresh sheets. Before we leave the soiled laundry will be started and the trash taken out. We want you to have nothing to do but rest and bond with baby. Over the next days and weeks to ensure that you receive the best possible care for you and your newborn baby, I will stay in close contact with you to provide support, postpartum and physical exams, assist with breastfeeding, and answer any questions you may have. All of these services will be provided to you in the comfort of your home. My goal is to stay connected with you and follow the healthy development of both you and baby.
A well-woman visit provides the opportunity to discuss healthy lifestyle activities as well as perform a health risk review. Provision and recommendations for preventive services contributes to the overall health and well-being of women throughout the lifespan. I will provide these recommendations as appropriate. I will complete a comprehensive history which will include a head to toe physical examination, including breast and pelvic examination. Family history will be taken to assess client's personal risk factors. Certified nurse midwives care for women across the lifespan, and periodic well-woman visits are appropriate and necessary for perimenopausal women and postmenopausal women as well. I will assist you with decision making instead of make decisions for you. The best part is these visits will be brought to your home!
Family planning counseling involves an in depth discussion with the client about her current and future child bearing plans. A key component of a well-woman visit for a reproductive-aged woman is the development and discussion of her reproductive life plan to ensure that testing and treatments provided are aligned with her current and future plans. Provision of family planning tools will be discussed and through shared decision making an option appropriate for each individual client can be chosen.
Primary care is the day-to-day healthcare provided by a health care provider. As a Certified Nurse Midwife I am able to assess, evaluate and treat clients for discomforts such as genitourinary infections, STIs for both the client and their partner, common cold, and various other mild discomforts. I am also able to collaborate, comanage or refer clients for specialist care.
